CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 27, 2010) – Although Occidental
College fell 11-3 and 10-7 in a double-header against Pomona-Pitzer
today at Anderson Field in Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference action, the Tigers competed with the No. 8
ranked Sagehens.
Game one was scoreless through 7.1 innings until PP struck with
three runs, to which the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom
of the eighth. Glenn Gray reached on in infield
single and Anthony Salsedo, who
pinch ran, scored on a single off the bat of first baseman
Pedro Aldape.
After starting pitcher Stephen Hilliard handed
the ball over after 7.0 innings, scattering five hits while
striking out six, things fell apart for the Tigers.
Eleven Sagehens' stepped up to the plate in the ninth, as
PP added six runs and strung together six consecutive hits, which
included a pair of one-out singles, followed by back-to-back
doubles and a two-run homerun by Nicholas Frederick, his second of
the weekend.
Overall, the bullpen gave up nine runs on eight hits and four
walks in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Occidental again looked to shortstop
Logan Allen and Salsedo, who drove in
Tyler Eyrich and Brent Wunner,
respectively, with two outs.
Trailing 6-0 after two and a half innings of game two, the Black
and Orange struck for four runs. Sending 10 men to the plate, Oxy
connected for six hits, including a double by Aldape that scored
both Gray and Hilliard. Gray also drove in a run in the frame, as
did Allen.
Oxy pulled one run closer when Allen, went deep with two outs
for the first of two homeruns in the game, which came in
back-to-back at-bats as he drove in three overall.
PP increased their lead to 8-5 with two runs in the fifth. The
Sagehens pushed across another pair in the eighth, although both
were unearned.
The final Occidental run of the game came in sliding fashion as
Casey Harms dove head first to the plate, scoring
on a wild pitch after singling to reach base.
Andrew Millian took the loss after allowing six
runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 3.2 innings. Ross
Pomerantz came on in relief and tossed 5.1 innings,
surrendering four suns, but only one earned, on six hits while
striking out a trio.
For Pomona-Pitzer (20-5, 14-1 SCIAC) Leo Rosetti and James
Brunswick each earned a win for the Sagehens today.
Occidental (7-18, 4-11 SCIAC) will be back out on Anderson Field
next Friday, April 2, when Claremont-Mudd-Scripps travels to Eagle
Rock for a single game. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
