Tigers snap skid with split against Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. (April 3, 2010) – On the road this afternoon, the Occidental College baseball team snapped a 14-game losing streak by holding on for a 9-7 victory at Arce Field over host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps after falling in the morning meeting 15-7 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Oxy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two when Stephen Hilliard lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Logan Allen who singled for the first of four times in the game. Allen, swiped second for his first of two stolen bases in the game  and moved to third on an error before crossing the plate one of two times in the game.

The Tigers added a run in the second when Brenton Wunner drove home Casey Harms as both singled. CMS quickly erased that lead, tying things up in the bottom of the second.

In the third, the Black and Orange pushed across three more runs to regain the lead. Three consecutive singles led off the inning before Glenn Gray drove in one on a fielders choice and Daniel Kelley doubled to drive in a pair.

Again in the fourth, Oxy plated three runs. Malachi Krishok connected for an RBI triple. Allen and Hilliard then knocked in runs on a single and double, respectively.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps made things close at 8-7 with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth as they sent eight men to the plate.

Occidental added an insurance run in the ninth when Pedro Aldape drove in Kevin Ozaki with his only hit of the game. The Tigers then sat the Stags down 1-2-3 in the ninth, ending with a 6-4-3 double-play.

Andrew Millian earned the win after throwing 5.2 innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing three runs, just two earned, while striking out five.

In game one of the day the Stags tagged Oxy pitching for 15 runs on 18 hits. Starting southpaw Tyler Eyrich took the grunt of the hits, lasing just 4.2 innings before Jacob Blodgett took over. Pedro Aldape came on for the final two outs of the game, which he recorded via strike outs.

Again, Oxy got an early 1-0 lead as Aldape drove in Hilliard in the first, but CMS put up crooked numbers in each of the first six innings.

The Tigers plated four in the fourth as they batted around. Wunner, Jacob Coleman, Anthony Salsedo and Allen each connected for an RBI single in the inning. Salsedo and Allen then scored in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively to round out the Oxy offense in the morning.

Overall on the day Allen was 8-for-10 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Wunner finished 4-for-8, driving in a pair. Ozaki, Hilliard, Aldape and Kelley each had two hits. Wunner, Ozaki, Gray and Harms scored twice apiece. Hilliard was 2-for-2 on the base paths.

Kelley had 10 putouts and six assists without an error at second base. Allen was responsible for four putouts and eight assists today in the field.

Friday, April 9, Occidental (8-20, 5-13 SCIAC) will travel to Whittier College to play the Poets in a single game to kick off their final three-game series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Field.
