CLAREMONT, Calif. (April 3, 2010) – On the road this
afternoon, the Occidental College baseball team snapped a 14-game
losing streak by holding on for a 9-7 victory at Arce Field over
host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps after falling in the morning meeting
15-7 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
play.
Oxy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two when
Stephen Hilliard lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring
Logan Allen who singled for the first of four
times in the game. Allen, swiped second for his first of two stolen
bases in the game and moved to third on an error
before crossing the plate one of two times in the game.
The Tigers added a run in the second when Brenton
Wunner drove home Casey Harms as both
singled. CMS quickly erased that lead, tying things up in the
bottom of the second.
In the third, the Black and Orange pushed across three more runs
to regain the lead. Three consecutive singles led off the inning
before Glenn Gray drove in one on a fielders
choice and Daniel Kelley doubled to drive in a
pair.
Again in the fourth, Oxy plated three runs. Malachi
Krishok connected for an RBI triple. Allen and Hilliard
then knocked in runs on a single and double, respectively.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps made things close at 8-7 with a run in
the seventh and three in the eighth as they sent eight men to the
plate.
Occidental added an insurance run in the ninth when
Pedro Aldape drove in Kevin Ozaki
with his only hit of the game. The Tigers then sat the Stags down
1-2-3 in the ninth, ending with a 6-4-3 double-play.
Andrew Millian earned the win after throwing
5.2 innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing three runs, just two
earned, while striking out five.
In game one of the day the Stags tagged Oxy pitching for 15 runs
on 18 hits. Starting southpaw Tyler Eyrich took
the grunt of the hits, lasing just 4.2 innings before Jacob
Blodgett took over. Pedro Aldape came on
for the final two outs of the game, which he recorded via strike
outs.
Again, Oxy got an early 1-0 lead as Aldape drove in Hilliard in
the first, but CMS put up crooked numbers in each of the first six
innings.
The Tigers plated four in the fourth as they batted around.
Wunner, Jacob Coleman, Anthony Salsedo and Allen
each connected for an RBI single in the inning. Salsedo and Allen
then scored in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively to round
out the Oxy offense in the morning.
Overall on the day Allen was 8-for-10 with a triple, three RBIs
and three runs scored. Wunner finished 4-for-8, driving in a pair.
Ozaki, Hilliard, Aldape and Kelley each had two hits. Wunner,
Ozaki, Gray and Harms scored twice apiece. Hilliard was 2-for-2 on
the base paths.
Kelley had 10 putouts and six assists without an error at second
base. Allen was responsible for four putouts and eight assists
today in the field.
Friday, April 9, Occidental (8-20, 5-13 SCIAC) will travel to
Whittier College to play the Poets in a single game to kick off
their final three-game series of the season. First pitch is
scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Field.
