Stags spoil senior day

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 30, 2010) – For the final time in 2010 and for the last time after four-year baseball careers for Glenn Gray and Jason Jebbia, Occidental College took to the diamond this afternoon. Oxy hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. The Stags earned a 10-1 victory over the Tigers by way of long ball.

Occidental out-hit CMS 10-9, but the Stags' third baseman Steve Dannaway was responsible for four of those nine hits, including a grand slam and a three-run homerun, as he scored four times and drove in seven on a 4-for-4 day, which also included a walk and a stolen base.

The Tigers' centerfielder Anthony Salsedo was 3-for-4, also reaching on a fielders choice. Logan Allen, who came into the game one-pitch in for an injured Jebbia who got one last start on his senior day, was 2-for-5 and was responsible for the only RBI of the game. Jacob Lee was hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter to lead off the seventh and scored the lone Tigers' run.

Gray reached base twice, drawing a walk in the first inning and being hit by a pitch in the fifth.

CMS pitcher, David Ulrich, tossed a complete game for the Stags.

Oxy starting pitcher Stephen Hilliard threw 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and striking out three. Only one of the six runs he gave up was earned. Brooks Belter struck out four in two innings before Andrew Millian came on in the ninth.

In the field Salsedo was busy all afternoon, recording 10 putouts. Allen had three putouts with two assists and Gray made the third out of the fourth inning.

Prior to the game Occidental took a few moments to recognize and honor both Jebbia and Gray who completed four-year careers at Anderson Field this afternoon. Both were named to the Third Team All-West Region and earned All-SCIAC recognition during their respective careers.

Occidental (14-24, 11-16 SCIAC) travels to SCIAC Champion Pomona-Pitzer (28-9, 22-5) tomorrow for a single game at 1:00 p.m. to close out the 2010 season.
