LOS ANGELES, Calif. – After a pair of postponements due to weather conditions, the Occidental College Tigers and Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen finally got in their double-header in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball action. It was the home Kingsmen who were the victors, limiting Oxy to two runs in two games as the Tigers fell 6-1 and 10-1 in the double-header on George "Sparky" Anderson Field to begin SCIAC play.
CLU jumped out to an early 2-0 first inning lead, adding four to their total in the bottom of the sixth by way of a bases clearing triple off the bat of designated hitter Darren Iacono.
The Tigers, who out-hit CLU nine to eight, produced their only run of the morning in the seventh when Brenton Wunner singled to lead the inning off, quickly swiping second. Freshman Joh Ugai singled, sending Wunner to third and teammate Chris Caldwell reached on a fielders choice, which scored Wunner.
Wunner and Anthony Salsedo had two hits apiece in the loss.
Cory Popham went 6.0 innings, striking out three before Alec Strain (1.2) and Tyler Eyrich (.1) combined for a hitless and scoreless final two innings.
Game two was more of the same as the CLU bats were hot for 13 hits, scoring 10 runs with five in the first inning. On the other side of things, the CLU pitching was equally as hot as starting pitcher John LaMoure sat down nine Tigers via strike out in five innings for the win.
Again, the lone Oxy run came in the seventh when Salsedo was hit by a pitch and stole both second and third setting up an RBI off the bat of Eyrich. Riley Smith was the only Tigers' player with more than one hit, as he connected for a pair of singles.
None of the 16 Oxy hits in the games were for extra bases.
Occidental (4-5, 0-2 SCIAC) will return to Anderson Field next Friday, Feb. 25 when they host the Caltech Beavers for a single game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
