Box Score LA VERNE, Calif. – On the final Friday of spring break the
Occidental College baseball team traveled to the University of La
Verne where a pitching duel ensued at Ben Hines Field in Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Leos
ousted the Tigers, 1-0, to take the opening game of a three-game
weekend series.
The teams combined for just seven hits and played errorless
baseball.
Oxy starter Ross Pomerantz went 6.1 innings,
striking out a pair while scattering three hits with three walks.
The lone Leos' run came in the seventh on a walk followed by
a single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single off the bat of Zach
Canfield, scoring Brian Tuttle.
Freshman Mitch Margolis came
on to shut down the Leopards over the final 1.2 innings, allowing
just one hit.
ULV (10-7, 7-3 SCIAC) senior Mark Larini (2-2)collected his
second complete-game shutout this season, striking out nine Oxy
batters en route to the victory.
The Tigers got to Larini for just three hits via the bats of
Van Fudge, Josh White and
Kevin Ozaki. Anthony Salsedo was
the only other Tiger to reach base, drawing a first inning
walk.
Fudge had six putouts at second base while Logan
Allen had five touches at shortstop.
Occidental (7-10, 3-6) will return to Anderson Field tomorrow
when they host the Leopards for a pair set to begin at 11:00
a.m.
