CLAREMONT, Calif. – On the final weekend of baseball
action in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
play the Tigers traveled to Arce Field where the
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags doubled up Occidental College, 2-1,
despite a late come-back effort by the Black and Orange in the top
of the ninth.
CMS collected three of their eight hits in the bottom of the
fourth inning, tagging Oxy starting pitcher Cory
Popham for a pair of runs, the only scoring of the
afternoon for the Stags.
Occidental, however, was unable to supply any run support for
the righty, grounding into four double-plays on the afternoon and
having a runner caught stealing.
In the top of the ninth a pair of Stags' errors sparked
the visiting squad, but a pitching change put Steven Ferguson on
the hill. The senior finished his home career sitting down the
final three batters he faced as a double play ended the
Tigers' threat.
Popham (3-6) worked 7.1 innings before handing the ball to
senior righty Brooks Belter who retired the final
two Stags he faced on strike outs.
Kevin Ozaki was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and
Anthony Salsedo scored the lone run after reaching
on an error. He also drew one of two walks, with the second issued
to Stephen Hilliard. Logan
Allen connected for the only extra base hit of the
game and drove in Salsedo.
Occidental (12-26, 8-19 SCIAC) will conclude their 2011 campaign
at home on Saturday at 1:00 when they host the Pomona-Pitzer
Sagehens (27-11, 17-10). The game will be available live via stats and
audio. Prior to the
start of the game, Occidental will recognize the 2011 senior
class.
