LOS ANGELES — In the opening game of an important series for both teams, Cal Lutheran got the better of the Occidental College baseball team 16-3 at Anderson Field on Friday, shaking up the already wide-open SCIAC standings.

The Tigers (14-10, 9-4 SCIAC), which came into the afternoon tied for first with La Verne (9-3, 14-9), fell one game back of the leading Leopards and into a tie for second with Cal Lu.

But it would probably be better to look at the standings at the end of the weekend. Any one of the top three teams could reasonably be in first come Monday.

Cal Lu did well for themselves on Friday though.

The game started slow — Oxy's Brent Wunner (Temple City) had the only hit through two innings — then the Kingsmen scored a run in each of the next four innings to cruise to a comfortable win.

Wunner, who was hitting .429 in conference going into the game, went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

In the top of the third, Garret Smith (Encinitas) doubled in John Leal (Modesto) to put the Kingsmen on the board first. Trevor Koons (Oceanside) singled in Smith two batters later to make it 2-0 midway through three.

The lead was short lived.

Oxy's Logan Allen (Atascadero) singled through the left side in the bottom of the third, A.J. Libunao (Huntington Beach), and Scott Hong (Los Angeles) each walked to load the bases, then Johnathan Brooks (Huntington Beach) ripped a line drive to center, scoring Allen and Libunao to tie the game at two.

But that was the last time the game was close though as the Kingsmen added 14 runs over the next five innings.

Iggy Wagner (Pahrump, Nev.) went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs and Nick DeLerenzo (Windsor) was 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs.

Tyler Eyrich (Stevenson Ranch), Oxy's ace and Friday starter who was leading the SCIAC in innings pitched going into the game, gave up seven runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

Oxy's entire pitching staff struggled. As a team, Oxy gave up 16 hits and walked seven.

Byron Minich (Thousand Oaks) went all eight innings for Cal Lu, giving up three runs with six strikeouts in the victory.

The series continues tomorrow at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.
