PASADENA — Riley Smith (Bellevue, Wash.) hit his first career home run and Logan Allen (Atascadero) also went deep — both inside the park home runs — leading the Occidental College baseball team to a comfortable 13-2 win at Caltech on Friday in the first game of a three-game series with the Beavers this weekend.
After going scoreless in the first two innings, Oxy blew the game open with two runs in the third, four in the fourth and six in the fifth.
At North Field, the biggest park in the league, about the only way to him a home run is to leg them out. Smith made his way around the bases on a line drive to center field off of Caltech (0-13, 0-16 SCIAC) starting pitcher Brian Pensereni in the top of the third. Allen, one of the faster players in the SCIAC, was touching third base before the Beavers fielded the ball on his home run, a solo shot in the fourth.
Allen and Smith each drove in three runs.
Tigers' starter Tyler Eyrich (Stevenson Ranch) struck out four batters and didn't allow an earned run in five innings pitched, improving to 4-2 on the season.
Oxy first baseman Pedro Aldape (Sherman Oaks), who's been red hot as of late, extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI-single that started a big sixth inning.
Anthony Salsedo (Tracy) went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple for the Tigers.
Oxy (12-6, 7-3 SCIAC) has now won three games in a row and eight of their last 11.
The series continues with a double header tomorrow at Anderson Field. The First game starts at 11 a.m.
