WHITTIER — Dan Kelley (Kirkland, Wash.) went 3 for 3 with an RBI-double, but the Occidental College baseball team managed just five hits against Whittier College's red-hot ace.
Ryan Schwenn, who threw a no-hitter in his last outing against No. 25 La Verne on March 30 and has logged wins over three top 25 NCAA Division III teams this season, gave up just one run in a complete-game effort. The 6-foot-2 senior had eight strikeouts without a walk, leading Whittier past Oxy 4-1 at Memorial Field on Friday in the first game of three between the teams this weekend.
Schwenn's hot streak started when he picked up impressive victories against No. 12 Ithaca on March 13 and No. 4 Kean on March 18.
Oxy's best chance to get to the Schwenn was when Kelley doubled in A.J. Libunao (Huntington Beach) with just one out in the top of the third. But Scott Hong (Los Angeles) and Anthony Salsedo (Tracy) flied out in consecutive at bats to end the inning.
The Poets (14-15, 8-11 SCIAC) strung together four hits for two runs in the first, and three hits for two more runs in the fourth.
Pedro Aldape (Sherman Oaks) and Libunao had Oxy's other two hits, both singles.
Mitch Margolis threw four scoreless innings in relief to keep the Tigers close, but Oxy (17-13, 12-7 SCIAC) never got to Schwenn.
The Tigers host Saturday's doubleheader with the Poets, starting at 11 a.m. at Anderson Field.
