Box Score 2 THOUSAND OAKS –The Occidental College women's volleyball team (5-1) extended its winning streak to four with a pair of wins over Schreiner and Linfield on Day 1 of the Cal Lu Fornia Tournament on Friday.
Match 1: Occidental 3, Schreiner 0
Dana Michels had a game-high 18 kills, Jessie Altman set up 30 points and Oxy made quick work of Schreiner at Cal Lutheran, 25-14, 25-17, 25-22.
Oxy controlled the entire match, only trailing for a brief period at the beginning of Game 3.
Michels, a powerful sophomore outside hitter, was able to work some finesse shots into her game to lead Oxy. Altman was just as important, running the offense and setting up the attack.
Stephanie Gann, who was named All-Tournament Team at the Elmhurst College Invitational, had two of her four service aces in the first game to set the tone. The senior finished with 12 kills on 28 attempts.
Sophomore defensive specialist Kandace Korver got the start and helped Oxy's back line keep the ball off the floor, finishing with seven digs and two aces.
Madyson Cassidy led Oxy led with 23 digs and Hana Hunt added 10.
Match 2: Occidental 3, Linfield 1
Alyssa Mort put away 14 kills on .261 hitting and Natalie Dwulet made three crucial plays at the net in Game 3 as Oxy beat Linfield.
After the Tigers dropped the first set, they got more aggressive with the serve and rallied to hand the Wildcats (3-1) their first loss of the season.
"We got off to a slow start, but then we picked up our serving game and hit our zones aggressively and accurately, which changed the momentum of the match," Oxy head coach Heather Collins said.
Dwulet had two kills and a block in Game 3 with the Tigers down five to swing the momentum.
Michels led the Tigers with 16 kills and Cassidy had 26 digs. Altman dished out 38.
Oxy plays two more matches at the Cal Lutheran tomorrow. The Tigers face Hendrix at 11:30 a.m. and George Fox at 4 p.m.
