Box Score CLAREMONT — Jake Chambers and Jonathan Wong got key hits as the Occidental baseball team used a five-run third inning to complete its second consecutive SCIAC sweep, beating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6-5 at Arce Field on Saturday.
The Tigers win their seventh game in a row, improving to 10-2 overall and 8-1 in SCIAC play, and move into a tie with Pomona-Pitzer for first place.
CMS falls to 0-15 and 0-9 in conference.
Chambers cleared the bases with a three-RBI double down the right-field line and then Wong followed it with a two-RBI single, giving Oxy a 5-0 lead.
Charlie Caccamo gave Oxy a sixth run with a triple in the fourth, bringing home Ryan Fuhrman.
Nolan Anderson and Alex Clemens each singled in a run for CMS in the fourth.
Oxy starting pitcher Riley James earned the win, pitching eight innings with five strikeouts and just two runs.
CMS rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to give Oxy a late scare, but Scott Ericksen came on for the final two outs to earn the save.
Fuhrman and Johnathan Brooks each went 2 for 4 for the Tigers.
Next Game: Oxy returns to action at Redlands on March 6 at 2:30 p.m. for the first of a three-game series with the Bulldogs next weekend. Oxy head coach Luke Wetmore, a Redlands alumnus, returns to his old stomping grounds trying to improve his 8-3 record against his Alma mater.
