Ericksen Pitches Shutout Against La Verne

Box Score

LA VERNEScott Ericksen was fantastic on the mound, pitching a complete-game shut out, and Johnathan Brooks went 3 for 5 with a home run, leading the Occidental baseball team to a 4-0 win at La Verne on Sunday.

The Tigers improve to 21-17 overall and 16-10 in SCIAC play. La Verne falls to 21-16 and 18-9.

Oxy can still tie with ULV for fourth place in the standings if it wins its last two games and ULV loses its final game against Whittier, but the ULV owns the tiebreaker for the final SCIAC Postseason Tournament position (head-to-head record and then record vs. other three tournament teams). The Tigers, sitting in fifth, cannot catch any of the teams currently positioned No. 1-3 in the conference.

Ericksen, a junior who's spent most of his career as Oxy's closer, was as good as he's ever been, striking out six.

"They had base runners, but Scott was so dominant he made pitches when it counted," Oxy head coach Luke Wetmore said. "Behind him our defense played clean."

Ericksen was able to induce inning-ending double plays in four different innings.

Brooks, who had a 28-game hitting streak until last weekend, hit a two-run shot over the right-field wall in the top of the seventh, putting Oxy up 4-0.

Devon DeRaad, who set Oxy's single season home run record at 12 with a bomb yesterday and is currently leading NCAA Division III in homers, drove in Brooks with a single for Oxy's first run in the top of the first.

Brady Fuller hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jonathan Wong in the fourth for Oxy's second run.

Next Game: The Tigers resume their rained out game from Saturday against Cal Lutheran on Monday at 3 p.m. with a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning and then finish the season at Whittier on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
