Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. — Bryan Smith continued his hot start to the 2017 season, leading the Occidental baseball team at a high-level NCAA Division III tournament in Tucson, Ariz. this weekend.
What: Oxy played Sul Ross St., George Fox and Linfield at the Cactus Classic.
Smith, who homered in Oxy's opener against Centenary last weekend, went 5 for 12 with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Four games into the season, the sophomore from Prescott, Ariz. is hitting .533 with four RBIs and a .611 slugging percentage.
The Tigers pulled off an impressive win in their final game on Sunday, beating Linfield 5-4, and went 1-2 on the weekend.
Game Winning Hit: Eamon McNeil capped Oxy's victory over Linfield and the trip with a walk-off single that brought home Jake Palumbo for the game-winning run. Palumbo competed well at the plate in the game, going 0 for 2, but earned three walks and scored twice. Smith went 1 for 4 with a pair of runs scored, Nolan McCarthy was 1 for 3 and Graham Pimm went 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Stepping Up to the Mound: Riley James, who's penciled in to be the Tigers' closer this year had to start Game 3 on Sunday with a depleted bullpen already spent from Saturday's battles. James went 6.1 innings, giving up just three runs, 3.1 innings longer than he has gone so far this spring. He gave up an early run, worked out of a couple jams and got a critical double play after an error.
DeRaad Tracker: Oxy All-American Devon DeRaad went 2 for 7 with four runs scored, an RBI, two doubles and five walks on the weekend.
Game 1: Sul Ross St. 9, Occidental 8 - Sul Ross St. rallied for five runs in the ninth to clip the Tigers.
Game 2: George Fox 6, Occidental 2 - A four-run eighth for GFU was the difference.
Game 3: Occidental 5, Linfield 4 - The Tigers flipped the script on the weekend, pulling off their own late inning heroics for the victory. McNeil came through with the winner.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season.
Next Game: Oxy begin SCIAC play on Friday at Whittier and then returns home to Anderson Field for a doubleheader to cap the three-game series with the Poets on Saturday.
