Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Bryan Smith had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a solo home run.
But that's about all that went well for the No. 21 Occidental baseball team in its season-opening loss to Centenary (La.), 11-1 in eight innings at Anderson Field on Sunday.
Jack Brancheau was the only other Tiger with a hit, going 1 for 3.
Oxy was bad in the field, committing seven errors.
Grant Debevec earned the win for Centenary, going 5.2 innings with nine strikeouts and just one earned run.
Oxy's Will Martel was charged with the loss.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 0-1.
Centenary improves to 3-1 overall and 3-1 against SCIAC schools during its California road trip. The Gents beat La Verne and took one of two games from Redlands.
Centenary, a member of the SCAC from Louisiana, was very good last season, going 26-13 overall.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Feb. 11 in Tucson, Ariz. at the Cactus Classic. Oxy will play four games during the weekend, beginning with Sul Ross St. at 10 a.m.
The Tigers are back in California against Whittier on Feb. 17 for their first SCIAC game and then return home on Feb. 18 against Whittier for a doubleheader.
