Oxy Wins George Fox Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

NEWBURG, Ore. — The Occidental baseball team beat George Fox 2-1 in a best of three series on the road this weekend.

Oxy finished off the holiday weekend with a 4-1 win on Monday.

George Fox took the first game of the series on Saturday, 7-3, and Oxy won Game 2, 10-3.

Oxy's bullpen was particularly impressive during the three game stretch, giving up no runs over the course of 12 innings of relief work.

"It was a good bounce-back weekend against a really good ball club that's picked to win its conference," Oxy head coach Luke Wetmore said. "We played team offense and had gutsy relief performances."

Game 1: George Fox 7, Occidental 3

GFU jumped on Oxy with seven runs in the first three innings and the Tigers weren't able to recover.

All-American starting pitcher Nolan McCarthy had a bumpy outing with seven earned runs in three innings, in the loss.

Michael Ingram went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a double at the designated hitter spot.

Christopher Stone struck out 10 batters in six innings to pick up the victory for GFU.

Oxy reliever Ian Vogenthaler went five innings with no earned runs for Oxy.

Game 2: Occidental 10, George Fox 3

Oxy's offense erupted in the second game with five runs in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

Oxy starter Diego Ramirez earned the victory in seven innings pitched, striking out six, with two earned runs and no walks.

Preston Chong led Oxy's offense, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and two runs scored, Antonio Andrade was 2 for 3 with three runs, a double and an RBI, Caleb Reyes was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Michael Netzel was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Game 3: Occidental 4, George Fox 1

The Tigers won a pitching duel in Game 3 to take the series.

Max Sterner put Oxy in great position with six innings pitched, seven strikeouts and just one earned run in the start, and then Cary Lucas, Justin Hirschberg and Devon Suske combined for three outstanding innings of relief to finish the job.

Chong had another big game at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a run scored and two RBIs, Nolan Upchurch was 2 for 3 with a double, and Andrade was 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 3-3 on the season, bouncing back from a bumpy opening weekend with some sloppy fielding.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action with a home series against Whitworth next weekend.
