Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES — After back-to-back tough losses against a good team, the Occidental College baseball team finished off its weekend series with a win over Whitworth at Anderson Field on Saturday.
The Tigers got a bad break on a call on Friday, fell in a close one 4-1 in the first game on Saturday and then finally beat the Pirates 11-2 in the afternoon contest.
Game 1: Whitworth 4 Occidental 1
Diego Ramirez started the game for the Tigers, going five innings, with three earned runs, six strikeouts and just two walks.
Justin Hirschberg and Cary Lucas combined for four solid innings of relief work, giving up just one earned run between them. Hirschberg pitched the sixth and then Lucas finished off the seventh, eighth and ninth.
Matthew Young earned the win for Whitworth.
Gus Patrick went 2 for 3 with Oxy's run scored in the fifth.
Game 2: Occidental 11, Whitworth 2
Antonio Andrade went 4 for 5 at the plate with a pair of home runs and doubles as the Tigers opened up a big lead in the series finale.
The Tigers led 5-2 before posting six runs in the bottom of the eighth to blow the game open.
Max Sterner was exceptional on the hill for Oxy, striking out three with just two earned runs, in all eight innings pitched.
Michael Ingram and Jake Fredrickson also homered for the Tigers.
Season Impact: Oxy's record goes to 4-5.
Whitworth is now 6-2.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Friday against Centenary (La.) at 2:30 p.m. at Anderson Field.
