Claremont, CA — This weekend, the women's volleyball team traveled to Claremont to participate in the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament that was hosted by Pomona-Pitzer, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and La Verne.
Oxy competed in four games over the two-day tournament. Day one saw the team face Whitman College and St. Scholastica. Day two, Oxy competed against Millikin and New England College. The Tigers rounded out the competition with a 2-2 record.
Day One:
In the first game against Whitman, first year Gabby Barber (Manhattan, NY) stepped up big time for the Tigers in set one when the team was down by 7 points. Barber was able to break up Whitman's advance with four key hustle plays on defense. Junior Lizzy Kerman (La Crescenta, CA) and sophomore Aniya Hawthorne (Oahu, HI) had strong attacks and high percentage, earning 16 (.342%) and 11 (.474%) kills. Oxy took the win in four sets with a final score of 3-1 (29-27, 16-25, 25-15, 25-19).
In the second game of the day, Lindsey Nurse (La Mesa, CA) stepped up offensively and was the best attacker for the Tigers. Nurse broke through the St. Scholastical defense with 11 (.360%) kills and controlled the net with 3 blocks. Iris Archibald (State College, PA) covered the court defensively and made multiple dynamic plays, earning 17 digs. Oxy put up a hard fight and kept the score tight, ultimately falling in four sets 3-1 (19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 16-25).
Day Two:
In the third game of the tournament, Oxy played competitively against Millikin. Kerman led offensively with 10 kills, followed by first year Estelle Harsh (Minneapolis, MN), who earned 8 kills. Archibald held the defensive line with 11 digs and successfully delivered 3 aces. Final score was 3-0 Millikin (26-24, 25-16, 25-19).
After two long days of competition, the Tigers rallied and swept New England College 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20). Kerman showed strong leadership, impressive shot selection, and all around was very strong defensively. Kerman had 9 (.409%) kills and 17 digs. Harsh connected with the ball the most on the outside to give the team 12 kills, as well as 13 digs. Chodaczek continued to manage the court well, with solid setting selection to keep the opposing team on their toes. Chodaczek earned 32 assists, 3 digs, and 1 block. Archibald made sure the momentum stayed in the Tigers favor by staying tight on defense and backing up the block.
