Whittier, CA — The Tigers traveled to Whittier College on Friday to open their conference series against the Poets at Elberg Field.
Ari Solomon got the Tigers' offense off to a hot start by singling into left field on the first pitch of the game. Later in the inning, Jonathan Marshall singled to bring him home and after Marshall was advanced to 3rd by a Lou Martineau single, he came home to make it a 2-0 ballgame early. Martineau followed suit and scored on a single from Sancho Llamas, and Llamas scored after Kyle Sugimoto reached base. After the 1st inning, Oxy lead 4-0.
Oxy's offense picked up again in the 7th inning as the bases were loaded after each of the first 3 batters of the inning reached safely. Nicholas Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to score Marshall, and Sugimoto singled to right field to bring home Llamas and Martineau. Oxy's offense continued to click in the 8th inning, with a Martineau single to right field to score Jeffery Cambra and Nolan Upchurch and Llamas bringing home another run as Marshall crossed the plate to make it an 11-0 ballgame.
While Oxy's offense was put on display, Jack Winterbauer threw a great game on the mound for the Tigers. In his first career complete game, Winterbauer threw 8 innings while only allowing 4 hits and 1 run to a potent Poets offense.
In addition to Winterbauer's performance, Cambra, Marshall, Sugimoto, Martineau and Llamas each had multi hit games and were key contributors to the team's performance. In the field, Llamas, Upchurch and Solomon worked together to produce 2 inning-ending double plays to silence the Poets offensive chances.
The Tigers leave Elberg Field on Friday victorious, winning by a score of 11-1. The Tigers play next on Saturday at Anderson Field to host a doubleheader against the Poets and finish their conference series.
