Los Angeles, CA — The Tigers finished their conference series at Anderson Field against the Whittier Poets on Saturday afternoon.
The bottom of the first inning saw a massive 2-out rally for the Tigers. With 2 outs, Jonathan Marshall drew a bases loaded walk to score the game's first run. Then, Sancho Llamas came up to the plate and drove a single to right field to score Nolan Upchurch and Jeffery Cambra. Nicholas Gonzalez then came up to the plate and singled through the left side and scored Marshall before Miles Capobianco laid down a perfect bunt to score Llamas on an RBI single. After the first inning, the Tigers led 5-0.
Whittier's offense caught fire in the following innings and extended their lead ahead of the Tigers. In the 5th inning, Llamas singled to bring home Upchurch and in the 7th Llamas scored with Nicholas Gonzalez on a 2 RBI single from Ari Solomon. Capobianco added to the offensive efforts by hitting another RBI single to score Lou Martineau.
Oxy's pitching showed some strong performances later in the game. In relief, First-Year Jamie Royka threw 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out 3 Poets and allowed only 2 hits. First-Year Evan Caulfield came on in relief for Royka in the 9th inning and proceeded to induce 3 consecutive groundouts to retire the side in order.
In a highly offensive game for both teams, the Poets walked away with a 14-9 win. The Tigers are back in action next Friday against #22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Anderson Field.
