Box Score 2 Los Angeles, CA — The Tigers held Senior Day on Saturday as their SCIAC conference play came to an end with a doubleheader against the University of Redlands Bulldogs at Anderson Field.
With Redlands jumping out to an early lead, the Tigers looked to answer back and found their rhythm in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The scoring began with a single from Garrett Palme to score Jonathan Marshall and move Sancho Llamas to 3rd. Shortly after, Miles Capobianco singled to left field to score both Palme and Llamas and Capbianco then scored on an RBI single from Senior Nolan Upchurch. After 2 innings, the Tigers led 4-3.
Redlands found success at the plate, but their scoring was stunted in the 5th inning. From the 5th inning on Jack Winterbauer and Wilson Schwegler only allowed 1 run, with Schwegler going 2 scoreless innings in relief and only walking 1 while striking out 2.
In his final home start of the season, Senior Jack WInterbauer was able to cap off his home season with a strong performance against a strong Redlands offense. Winterbauer has been a key pitcher among Oxy's staff and leads the team in categories such as games started, innings pitched and strikeouts.
In the 9th inning, Oxy found some offense coming off the bat of Upchurch. On his final day playing at Anderson Field, Upchurch launched a solo home run over the fence in left field to creep closer to the Redlands lead. The home run gave Upchurch a 2-5 day at the plate with 2 RBIs.
The game ended with Redlands taking the win by a score of 9-5.
Following the conclusion of Game 2 of the series the Tigers hosted the University of Redlands Bulldogs for Game 3 of their conference series at Anderson Field. The second game of the doubleheader, this game was the final home game of the season for the Tigers and Game 2 of Oxy's Senior Day celebration.
Senior Tom Stoodt was honored during the first inning of the game. Despite dealing with an injury, Stoodt appeared at 3rd base and was given a curtain call after he was substituted following the game's first pitch. When healthy, Stoodt is a strong piece in Oxy's lineup and has hit .348 this season while stealing 7 bases, which led the conference early in the season before being sidelined.
Senior Jonathan Marshall was able to put an exclamation mark on his senior day experience, as he homered to left field in the bottom of the 3rd inning. His 8th of the season, the home run broke a tie with fellow senior Ari Solomon for the team lead of 7 home runs. Marshall finished his day with a 2-3 line, capping off an impressive season at Anderson Field in which he hit 6 of his 8 home runs and hit .316.
Senior Ari Solomon entered Saturday riding an 8-game hit streak, his 2nd hit streak of at least 8 games. Aside from his dominant 2023 season at the plate in which he's so far hit .336 with 7 home runs, Solomon has been an integral part of the Tigers' defense. Solomon currently leads the SCIAC in putouts and double plays turned while boasting a .983 fielding percentage.
Senior Nolan Upchurch has been involved in 28 of those double plays this season and has been a cornerstone in Oxy's defensive strengths this season. The everyday starter at shortstop, Upchurch has put together a strong season at the plate and ranks among the top team performers in a variety of categories, including At Bats, Hits, and RBI.
In the final home game of the season, the Bulldogs walked away victorious and won by a score of 14-1. The Tigers travel to Willamette next weekend to wrap up their season against the Willamette University Bearcats.
