Los Angeles, CA – In a thrilling matchup on Saturday, February 10, the Occidental women's tennis team showcased their strengths on the court as they secured a resounding victory against Hope International University to start off the spring season.
From the outset, Occidental's doubles teams set the tone for the day, with the first year players making a significant impact. First years Seb Kombo and Sydney Sasaki staged a remarkable comeback from a 5-2 deficit in doubles, ultimately clinching a thrilling 8-6 victory at number two doubles. Their display of resilience and teamwork epitomized the spirit of the Occidental tennis program.
Meanwhile at number one doubles, first years Elina Shalaev and Kristina Lee delivered a dominating performance with their 8-1 win. Their exceptional coordination and strategic play laid a solid foundation for the team moving into the singles section of the match.
As the singles matches commenced, Oxy's first years continued to shine, going undefeated on the day and making significant contributions to the team's victory. With straight-set wins at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles, the Tigers displayed their talent and determination, highlighting their potential as future key players of SCIAC tennis.
In the number one singles matchup, Lee demonstrated unwavering focus and skill, claiming victory with a commanding score of 6-4, 6-0 against their opponent. Similarly, Shalaev had remarkable tenacity and composure at the number two slot, clinching a hard-earned win with the scores of 7-5, 6-3. Mia Malone, another first year, had a stellar performance in number six, and was able to claim a decisive victory by closing out the match with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
With this win at the start of the spring season, the Tigers affirm their position to be formidable contenders this year and the success of the first years highlight the team's bright future.
The women's tennis team will be back in action this Friday, February 16, at San Diego City College for a 3 p.m. match.
