Oxy Strong at Whitworth Invitational

Spokane, WA – While the majority of the Occidental track and field teams remained at home for the dual meet with Pomona-Pitzer, a handful of student athletes traveled for the Whitworth Invitational to compete in the indoor meet.  The Tigers showcased their speed and endurance with several athletes making notable performances.

 

Men's Highlights:

In the men's 60 meter qualifying round, Christopher Halibrton, represented Oxy with a strong showing, finishing ninth with a time of 7:06.  Tobias Searchy-Jorgensen also demonstrated his sprinting prowess, securing 26th place with a time of 7.23.  Both student-athletes achieved personal records in the event.  Haliburton continued to impress in the preliminary round of the 60 meter dash, clocking 7.01 for second PR of the day in the same event.  

Oxy's talent was again out on display in the men's 200 meter with Shane Kawakami-Williams, a first year, leading the pack with a solid performance.  Kawakami-Williams finished in 11th with a time of 22.19.  Halliburton once again demonstrated his versatility and speed, securing 19th place with a time of 22.56.  Following Halliburton was Jonah Magill in 24th with a time of 22.86 and Searchy-Jorgensen in 29th with a time of 23.09.

Kawakami-Williams continued to excel in the meet, claiming 10th place in the 400 meters with a time of 49.19 seconds.  His impressive time ranked him 32nd in the 400 meters in Division III, highlighting his exceptional ability and potential in the event.

In the distance events, Amir Barkan led the charge in the men's 3000 meters, showcasing his endurance and grit.  Barkan finished seventh with a time of 8:33.58 and was closely followed by Renn Stearns who finished in 19th.  Stearns delivered a standout performance by running a remarkable 23-second personal record.

 

Women's Highlights:

In the women's 200 meter, sophomore Eliza Hawley represented Oxy well with a strong showing, finishing 16th with a time of 25.94.  Notably, Hawley achieved a personal record in the 200 meter, highlighting her continued improvement and dedication to her craft.  She continued to excel in the 400 meters, clocking in at 59.60 to finish in 15th place.  First year Delphine Way finished in 26th place with a time of 1:01.78 for her first collegiate indoor meet.  

In the women's 3000 meters, the powerhouse duo made up of senior Ciara Gillen and sophomore Jenna LeNay worked together to finish in the top ten.  LeNay crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 10:22.47 and Gillen, right on her heels, crossed the line in seventh place with a time of 10:27.19.  

In the field events, first year Amelia Weitz showcased her prowess in the jumps.  In the long jump, she secured 23rd with a distance of 4.64 meters (15'2.75").  In the triple jump, Weitz was in the top eight with a distance of 9.84 meters (32'3.5").  In the women's shot put, senior Gabriela Knutsen claimed 18th place with a throw of 10.56 meters (34'7.75").
