LOS ANGELES, Calif. –
Nasir Luna and
Jacob Hamermesh picked up two of the conference's most coveted awards on Thursday, February 27. The first year, Luna, was named the SCIAC's Newcomer of the Year, while Hamermesh received the Ted Ducey Award.
Â
Luna led the Tigers in scoring at 18.1 points per game – he was fifth in the conference in that mark while pacing all first years in the SCIAC. He scored 20 or more points on seven occasions while boasting 49/38/87 shooting splits.
Â
The last Tiger to average more points in a season was Zach Baines in the 2018-19 campaign, and no first year has ever averaged or scored as many points in recent era – dating back to the Tigers' first available online data in 2006. The guard scored 416 points in his debut campaign.
Â
Hamermesh earned the Ted Ducey Award for a combination of his ability on the court, leadership skills, sportsmanship, and academics. Hamermesh fostered a culture of respect and determination in his four years with the men's basketball program. Coach Newhall noted his unwavering commitment to both basketball and his community as marquee traits to Hamermesh's character.
Â
While at Oxy, Hamermesh served as Programming Chair, President and Treasurer of Hilel and was a founding member of the Chabad Club. Additionally, he served as the PA announcer for women's lacrosse and play-by-play broadcaster for men's soccer. Hamermesh tutored K-5 students in his spare time.
Â
The Tigers ended the season 9-16 overall and 4-12 in SCIAC play.
