PREVIEW: Three Tigers set to compete at NCAA Championships

5/21/2025 2:19:00 PM

GENEVA, Ohio – Occidental Track & Field readies for the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Here is everything you need to know about the event and the three Tigers competing in it.

THE FIVE W'S

Shane Kawakami-Williams, Renn Stearns and Jenna LeNay are the three Tigers competing at the championships. They all travel to the event that represents the pinnacle of DIII track for the first time in their careers.

The championships will be held at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, starting May 22 through May 24. The top eight finishers in each event are named First Team All-Americans. The next eight are awarded Second Team All-American honors. There are 22 competitors in each field.

The fifth W, weather, looks rainy Thursday and Friday with sun starting to show Saturday – the only Tiger with a chance to compete Saturday is Kawakami-Williams should he reach the 100 finals. Winds are said to be sustained between 10 and 15 miles per hour, with gusts up to 20.

RENN STEARNS

Stearns is the first athlete competing with his race set for 7:10 p.m. Eastern Time on May 22. Should he finish in the top 12 of all runners, Stearns gets a shot at the final the following evening, 4:40 p.m. May 23.

Stearns earned a second-place finish in the steeplechase at the SCIAC Championships April 26. He followed up on his personal best time with another PR a week later. The 8:57.51 mark recorded by Stearns at the Oxy Invite is the nation's 21st ranked time and the seniors' best to date.

Over the years, Stearns has improved his time by 1:20. He first ran the event at the SCIAC Multi-Dual on March 5, 2022. The – then first year – completed the event in 10:17.98. Over his first year, Stearns improved that time by 30 seconds – 9:47.50. He dropped it to 9:19.76 in 2023 a year later as a sophomore.

JENNA LENAY

LeNay is the next Tiger to hit the track, well into the night on May 22. The junior will run in the day's final event – the women's 10,000-meter run – with hopes to notch her first All-American finish.

This is LeNay's third time at an NCAA Championship event and first at the DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Earlier this season, LeNay clinched a spot at Cross Country nationals, repeating as a selection from 2023. Both times, she's finished just outside of All-American contention.

LeNay holds the school record in the 10k with her mark of 35:43.36. She shattered her previous record of 36:02.30 she set a year ago after shaving off 19 seconds. Since setting it at the Oxy Distance Carnival back in March, LeNay has only ran the 10k once at the Bryan Clay Invite in April

SHANE KAWAKAMI-WILLIAMS

Kawakami-Williams earns his first trip to the NCAA Championships in his sophomore season after running a program-best 10.46 at the APU Last Chance meet May 8.

Prior to his record setting race, Kawakami-Williams' top time was 10.56 from the Redlands Invite a year ago. He ran sub-10.5 twice on May 8.

He'll have his hands full with a field that sports five runners under 10.3 and one sniffing the nine's.
