LOS ANGELES — Before the final home game of the season, baseball celebrated the athletic and academic achievements of the program's ten seniors. The program's ten seniors includes
Matthew Uytioco,
Ben Rutkin,
Logan Rooney, Nick Gonzalez,
Daniel Major,
Antonio Vazquez, DYlan Fanelli,
Jeremy Peddle,
Taylor Cann, and
Riley Holcomb, who were joined on the field by family and friends.
Occidental fell to Pomona-Pitzer with a final score of 13–1 on Friday at Anderson Field. Despite the loss, Occidental managed to secure eight hits but struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Occidental opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning.
Benjamin Fitzgerald singled to left center and advanced to third on
Tyler Kubo's single through the right side.
Daniel Major then delivered an RBI single to right center, bringing Fitzgerald home for a 1–0 lead. Score: Occidental 1, Pomona-Pitzer 0.
Pomona-Pitzer responded in the fourth inning. Tanner DeGrazia hit a two-run homer to left center, scoring Cooper Berry, who had been hit by a pitch. Score: Pomona-Pitzer 2, Occidental 1.
In the fifth inning, Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead. Sammy Lee homered to center field, and later, Berry hit a two-run homer to right field, scoring Kai Gonzaga, who had walked. Score: Pomona-Pitzer 5, Occidental 1.
Pomona-Pitzer added three more runs in the sixth inning. Greg Pierantoni hit a two-run homer to left center, and Landon Hu later scored on a sacrifice fly by Peter Savas. Score: Pomona-Pitzer 8, Occidental 1.
The seventh inning saw Pomona-Pitzer further its lead. Pierantoni hit another two-run homer to center field, and DeGrazia doubled down the left field line, driving in two more runs. Score: Pomona-Pitzer 13, Occidental 1.
Occidental was unable to add to its tally in the remaining innings, resulting in a decisive victory for Pomona-Pitzer. Final score: Pomona-Pitzer 13, Occidental 1.
Riley Holcomb took the mound for Occidental, pitching 5 2/3 innings while striking out three batters.
Antonio Vazquez relieved Holcomb, followed by
Jeremy Peddle and
Matthew Uytioco.
Major recorded two hits and drove in one run, adding a stolen base to his performance. Fitzgerald scored one run and added a hit to his tally. Kubo collected one hit while also being hit by a pitch twice.
Griffen Rogers contributed with one hit and successfully stole a base.
The Tigers will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader in Pomona tomorrow, Saturday, May 2nd with game times of 11AM and 2:30PM.
