CLAREMONT, Calif. (April 19, 2008) –
Occidental College used a 7-2 win over Whittier College at the 2008
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament
to capture a fifth place finish and a fourth place standing in the
conference. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the SCIAC champions, hosted the
two-day event.
Oxy looked to Vic Sowers,
Vince Karlen and Alex Montgomery
for 2-0 performances on the day with wins in both doubles and
singles play.
Karlen and Montgomery combined for an 8-2 win
in doubles play before defeating opponents 7-5, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2,
respectively. Sowers joined with Dan Ikuta for an
8-4 doubles win at the # 2 spot.
At the # 1 singles slot Sowers defeated Ted
Wyatt 6-0, 6-4.
Mike Kuhn won 7-5, 6-4, at
the # 4 spot for the Tigers and Stefan Pastor
rounded out the wins for Oxy at the # 6 spot with a 6-2, 6-1
victory.
The Tigers finished the season with an 11-9
overall record and a 5-5 SCIAC mark.
