LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2009) - On Friday the men's tennis
team hosted the #13 ranked University of Redlands, before traveling
to take on the #30 Pomona Pitzer Sagehens, in back to back SCIAC
dual matches. A daunting task, but the Tigers, ranked
12th in the west region, battled before falling to the
higher ranked opponents.
Friday afternoon, the Bulldogs came in and dominated singles
play, only dropping nine games. But in doubles play, the
tandem of Reid Fenning and Chris
Wan, battled to before falling 8-6. Trying
everything to avoid a sweep, but in the end, the fourth ranked team
in the west region came away with a 9-0 victory.
Things didn't get much easier on Saturday morning, as the men
traveled to take on the eighth best team in the west, but played
much better. All three doubles matches were won by Pomona by
a score of 8-4. Singles play proved a different story, as
Stefan Pastor lost a close 6-4, 6-4 decision, and
Mike Kuhn took the #39 ranked player in the region
to 7-5 in the second set before falling. Wan
though was able to breakthrough and notch the only win of the day,
sweeping Grant Friedman 6-4, 6-4. Pomona did take the match
8-1, but it was a lot closer then that score indicates.
Next up for Occidental will be another SCIAC opponent, as they
host Whittier College on Saturday, February 28th, with
play beginning at 9:30 a.m.
