LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2009) - On Friday the women's
tennis team traveled to Redlands for their second SCIAC match of
the season, but the outcome left them on the wrong end of a 9-0
defeat, falling to the #14 ranked team in the nation. Less
then 24 hours later the women had to host the #7 ranked team in the
country, the Pomona Pitzer Sagehens, and they could not muster a
single set win and fell 9-0 to drop to 1-2 on the season.
Against the University of Redlands, Oxy battled in the singles
department, with Jennifer Wahba losing a tight 7-5
set before being overpowered in the second set to fall 6-1 to Paige
Sumida, the #5 ranked singles player in the region. The
closest contest of the day came from Marissa
Cassman who fell 6-4 and 7-5 to Tori Damiani, the #14
ranked singles player in the west region. The bulldogs
dominated the doubles portion of the event, winning 8-2, 8-2, and
8-1.
It did not get any easier for the Tigers on Saturday morning, as
they won only 12 games against one of the best teams in the
nation. Cassman again was a bright spot for
Oxy, as she stayed with Paige Wolstencroft in the opener of each
set, before the #18 player in the region broke her twice in each
set to win going away.
Next up for Occidental will be another ranked opponent, as they
travel to Chapman University to take on the #30 ranked Panthers on
Thursday, February 26th, with play beginning at 2:00 p.m.
