LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2009) –
Hoping to snap a three match skid, the men's tennis team
hosted the Whittier College Poets Saturday morning in a SCIAC dual
match. In a very even
match up, the Poets just won a few bigger points, beating the
Tigers 6-3.
The Tigers dominated the doubles portion of
the competition, as Tyler Morgan and Stefan Pastor
dominated the number two doubles team, easily winning 8-3. Following suit was Victor Sowers and
Mike Kuhn,
who held off the Poets number three doubles team, 8-6. Whittier College was able to
salvage a close 8-6 victory and escape without being swept out of
the doubles matches.
Singles proved to be a completely different
problem, as Whittier came alive, winning five of the six
matches. Chris Wan, who
narrowly lost his doubles match, came through to sweep Gavin Smith
of Whittier 6-1, 6-1.
Kuhn lost a
tight three set match, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6.
That tight loss in doubles and slim three set
defeat proved costly, if one or two breaks would have gone the
Tigers way, they would have pulled out a 5-4 victory. But on this day they had to walk
away with a 3-6 defeat, pushing the losing streak to four.
Next up for
Occidental will be St. John's University, on Monday, March
2nd, with play beginning at 7:00 p.m. on the Tigers home
courts.
