Tigers Finish Sixth at SCIAC Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. (April 18, 2009) – The 2009 Occidental College men's tennis season culminated this weekend at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament hosted by the University of La Verne in Redlands. All eight league schools competed with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earning their fourth consecutive title. Occidental finished sixth overall with a tough 5-4 loss to Whittier in the final round.

On the first day of the tournament Oxy fell 5-0 at the hands of the California Lutheran University Kingsmen. The Tigers rebounded in the Semifinals during the afternoon with a clean 9-0 sweep of La Verne, in their final season of intercollegiate play before the program is put on hiatus.

Reid Fenning paired up with Chris Wan to win 8-3 at No. 1 singles and Victor Sowers teamed up with Mike Kuhn to win at No. 3 singles  before both Fenning and Sowers cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at the third and fourth single slots, respectively. Wan landed on top 6-4, 6-3 in the closest set of the afternoon at No. 2.

In the final morning of action in 2009, the Tigers found themselves down 2-1 after doubles play. Kuhn and Sowers were responsible for the Oxy victory, pulling off an 8-6 win. Sowers then went on to win his singles match, defeating Lance Francy 6-2, 6-4. Also turning in singles wins came from Wan (6-2, 6-0) and Fenning (6-4, 6-0).

Occidental finishes the season where they entered the tournament, sixth, and posted a 5-12 overall record with a 3-6 SCIAC mark. CMS finished first ahead of Redlands, Cal Lutheran, Pomona, Whittier, Oxy, Caltech and La Verne.

The Tigers bid farewell to a trio of players, Fenning, Kihn and Jackson May, who donned black and orange for the final time of his collegiate career this weekend.
