POMONA, Calif. (April 11, 2010) – The Tigers traveled to Cal Poly Pomona for a final regular season dual match before heading to the conference tournament this weekend. In a thriller, the Black and Orange came within a set of knocking off the division two Broncos, losing 5-4.
Chris Wan and Victor Sowers opened doubles with an 8-3 win, before Cal Poly Pomona responded with back to back wins, taking control of the match going into singles.
The Black and Orange came out fired up, as Wan knocked off the number one singles player in straight sets. The Broncos retook the lead, but it was short lived, as Ben Herrington-Gilmore tied the match up at three with a 7-5, 6-3 decision.
Stephen Perkins stepped up with the Tigers trailing 3-4, and was down a set before coming back to force a third set with a 6-3 win, but a late break was all the Broncos needed to pull out a 6-4 win and the overall victory.
Oxy (9-8, 2-4) now will travel to Pomona Pitzer on Friday, April 16th for the opening round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
