WHITTIER, Calif. (April 16, 2010) – Oxy opened up the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 5-2 win over Cal Lutheran. The upset of the fourth seeded Regals, a squad that had knocked off the Tigers earlier in the year, set up a semifinal showdown with Pomona Pitzer. The Tigers came up short against the undefeated and top seed Sagehens, being swept 9-0.
In the quarterfinals, Oxy played well and controlled most of the matches against Cal Lutheran. Winning two of three in doubles, the team of Kris Subbiah and Marissa Cassman won 8-6, while Frances Hutton and Rachel Washtien cruised to an 8-3 victory.
Cassman then teamed up with Katrina Gould and Jessica Go to notch singles victories, which was enough to send the Tigers to the semifinals for the second straight season.
In the semifinals, the regionally ranked (#13) Tigers faced off against the nationally ranked (#7) Sagehens. Pomona Pitzer has only lost two sets all season in SCIAC play, and the Black and Orange could not change that statistic, as they were swept 9-0.
Tomorrow at 10am Oxy will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for 3rd place in the SCIAC tournament. The match will take place at the Palm Park Recreation Center. For more tournament information please visit: http://www.wcpoets.com/sports/wten/2009-10/news/sciac_championships
