WHITTIER, Calif. (April 17, 2010) – Oxy sprinted out to a 3-0 lead in the third place dual match at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Rolling through doubles, and putting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a huge hole going into singles. But the Athenas rallied, winning five of six, to take home third place with a 5-4 win.
Kris Subbiah and Marissa Cassman continued their stellar run, knocking off the top doubles team to open the dual match, but they were overshadowed by even better play from the teams of Jessica Go / Katrina Gould and France Hutton / Rachel Washtien who rolled to victories.
Up 3-0 going into singles, the Tigers were closing in on back-to-back third place finishes in the SCIAC tournament, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had their sights set on that goal as well.
The Athenas rallied, winning four of five in dominating fashion, with the lone Tiger win coming from Subbiah in the form of a 6-3, 6-2 sweep.
All eyes shifted to Cassman's match, as she was in a battle that would decide the match, falling 6-4 in the opening set she came back to dominate the second, winning 6-0. The third set added to the drama, as it went to a tiebreak, with both athletes playing so well no one could predict the outcome. Unfortunately for the Black and Orange, Cassman fell 7-6 (9-7) in the third, and the Athenas denied the Tigers a second consecutive top three finish.
The Tigers will now move on to individual play, traveling to the Ojai tournament this coming week, with individual play beginning this Thursday, April 22nd.
