LOS ANGELES, Calif. — For the second time in less than 24 hours the Occidental College women's volleyball team needed five games to get a decision, only this time the result was not what they were looking for.

The Tigers (8-4) lost a non-conference match to Chapman University (11-5) 15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12 at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday, the first of the team's double-header.

Oxy was down 9-2 at one point during the fifth set and rallied back to pull within three, but lost the game and their first home match since their season opener against on Sept. 7.

"I couldn't ask for a better comeback, but our problem is we're getting so complacent that we're letting teams get that huge lead on us and then we find that sense of urgency to comeback and play all out and play with heart and intensity, Occidental coach Heather Collins said. "We need to do that consistently all the way through. That's our big struggle right now."

It was the second time the two teams met this season, the first a 3-1 Tigers win at the Posada Invitational on Sept. 10.

Katie Wiese did everything she could to get the Tigers back into the last game, during a Tigers run that brought the score to 14-11, but it wasn't enough.

"I think Katie Wiese did a really good job of staying on their hitters for the most part and her offense was really great," Collins said.

Kasey Rose was impressive again off the bench with 14 kills and three aces.

"Kasey Rose came in for the second straight night and just was aggressive and that's what we're asking for."

Logan Boyer-Hayse had a team-high 18 kills and Chapman's Kate Ferrin led the game with 20.

The Tigers Face Cal Tech in their second game of the day at 6 p.m.

GAME 2

The Tigers recouped quickly after losing in the first game to Chapman, beating Cal Tech 25-9, 25-8, 25-11 at Rush Gymnasium.

Oxy had seven different players total 14 aces as they cruised to victory in their second game of the day. Sita Wong and Jessie Altman had three; Boyer-Hayse, Alyssa Mort and Stephanie Gann had two; and Rose and Zoe Hamilton each recorded one.

Megan Upp had nine assists and Wong added had 10 digs off of the bench for the Tigers (9-4, 2-1).

"It was nice to get some players who haven't seen the court much yet this year some playing time," Collins said.
