CLAREMONT — Joseph Kling (Kirksville, Mo.) and Matt Malott (San Diego) both pitched gems in two wins at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, and the Occidental College pitching staff didn't allow an earned run all weekend in its three-game sweep of the Stags.
Kling went seven innings with five strikeouts and four hits before handing the ball to Scott Hong (Los Angeles) who closed the door with two scoreless innings to give Oxy a 6-1 win in Game 1.
Malott pitched all seven innings in a 11-0 win in Game 2, giving up just three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The day before, Oxy ace Tyler Eyrich (Stevensons Ranch) pitched a shutout in a 7-0 win at Anderson Field that snapped Oxy's six-game losing streak.
A.J. Libunao (Huntington Beach) was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a pair of doubles in Game 1. Logan Allen (Atascadero) went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a double, and Brent Wunner (Temple City) was 3 for 4 with a run scored in Game 2.
The Only run the Tigers (17-12, 12-6 SCIAC) surrendered all weekend was on an error made by second baseman Dan Kelley (Kirkland, Wash.) that allowed Scott Witte to score in the top of the fifth in the first game on Saturday.
All three of Oxy's starters were on their game, but it was the group coming together despite a bumpy stretch that knocked them out of first place last weekend that Occidental head coach Luke Wetmore said was the difference.
"We had great pitching, solid defense and quality approaches a the plate," Wetmore said. "It could not have been done without every member of this team."
The sweep puts Oxy right back in contention for its first SCIAC championship since 1982, just two games behind La Verne (19-10, 14-4 SCIAC) and Cal Lutheran (19-8, 14-4 SCIAC).
"I could not be happier for the seniors in this program," Wetmore said. "They have never stopped believing in their ability to play at a high level and all of our success thus far is because of their dedication and commitment to bringing back a winning tradition to Oxy."
The Tigers open up their last three-game series of the season against Whittier on April 6 before beginning one round robin of single games against each SCIAC team.
