LA MIRADA—The Occidental College women's tennis team swept the singles competition on their way to an 8-1 victory over the host Biola University (0-9) on Friday.

The top two doubles teams for the Tigers (2-2) beat their opponents 8-3, 8-4 respectively.

The No. 3 doubles pair of Sara Chareny (South Pasadena) and Julie Housman (Beverly Hills) fell 8-3, in what proved to be the only loss for Oxy on the afternoon.

Despite the 2-1 advantage on the score sheet, Occidental women's tennis coach Jeffrey Normile was not pleased with his team's effort.

"We need to come out of the gate with energy, not work into it over time," Normile said.

The Tigers picked up their effort in the singles competition, sweeping the Eagles one through six. 

Krishnaveni Subbiah (Beaverton, OR) led off in the No. 1 spot, defeating Mariah Pace 6-0, 6-3.

Rachel Buckner (Cortlandt Manor, NY) defeated her opponent in the No. 2 singles match in straight games to build the Oxy lead to 4-1.

No. 3 Frances Hutton (Baltimore) (6-1, 6-3), No. 4 Katrina Gould (Davis) (6-1, 6-0), and No. 6 Amber Gadsden (Yigo, Guam) (6-1, 6-0), all defeated their counterparts in two sets.

The only singles player for Biola to win a set was Rachel Thong who took No. 5 Chareny to three frames following a 6-4 first set victory. Chareny held on and completed the singles competition sweep with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win.

"After a slow start we picked up our game and played at a level we should be playing at," said Normile.

"All in all, it was a good afternoon. Good lead into a tough weekend schedule."

The Tigers play again later this weekend at Scholl Canyon Tennis and Golf as they host Vassar College at 10 a.m. on Sunday and Kenyon at 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
