Box Score LOS ANGELES — All-SCIAC libero Madyson Cassidy and the Occidental College women's volleyball team did everything they could to try to slow down star Pomona-Pitzer outside hitter Allie Frappier.
But the standout transfer from Yale who came into the night leading the nation in kills per set (5.99) took over the match in Game 2 and came through in crunch time in a pivotal Game 3, leading the Sagehens to a win over Oxy at Rush Gymnasium on Friday, 19-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-19.
The loss drops Oxy into fifth place at 8-5 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens jump the Tigers in the SCIAC standings for the fourth-place, moving to 8-4.
Cassidy dominated the first set, keeping attack after attack from Frappier and the rest of the Sagehens off the floor with 10 of her game-high 33 digs.
"We had this tenacious focus where we played out of our minds in Game 1 Then as soon as we started to we started to think, we made some very clear mistakes," Cassidy said. "Overall we played with heart and energy, and some of our best volleyball of the season."
Game 2 was a different story. Frappier found her rhythm, finding the floor for 10 of her kills in the set to even the match.
In Game 3, Oxy took a 24-23 lead when Dana Michels tooled off the block for one of her 15 kills. But Frappier put away three of Pomona-Pitzer's last four points the steal the momentum of the match.
Seemingly deflated from dropping a competitive third set, Oxy quickly fell behind 7-1. Oxy cut the lead to three or less on five different occasions, but couldn't get over the hump.
The Tigers had a balanced attack offensively with four players in double digits. Dana Michels and Stephanie Gann led with 15 kills each, Alyssa Mort had 13 and Natalie Dwulet had 10.
Gann hit .343 and had just three errors.
Jessie Altman led with a game-high 49 assists, and Dwulet and Megan Olayinka each had six block assists.
Oxy hosts UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference match tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Tigers return to SCIAC play on Tuesday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
