Box Score LOS ANGELES — The five seniors that have been the core of the Oxy women's volleyball team for the past four years, could not have been much better on their senior night.
Stephanie Gann was close to unstoppable, Madyson Cassidy was all over the floor defensively, setter Jessie Altman ran the show and the Tigers earned a definitive win over Redlands, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18.
Alyssa Mort was consistent from the outside and Hana Hunt added steady defense and aggressive serving.
They even led the crowd in the singing of the national anthem before the match when the gym sound system went down.
Some of the most exciting plays of the night at Rush Gymnasium were familiar sights. Diving dig by Cassidy, quick set by Altman, powerful kill by Gann, including the last point of the match and the trio's career in Rush Gymnasium.
"I knew that Jessie had confidence in me to finish the game," Gann said. "As soon as I knew the ball was coming to me, I just wanted to end the game on a hard hit and it felt great putting it away."
Gann finished with 20 kills on .395 hitting, many of them shots the defense had no chance of touching.
"The entire time before the game in warm ups we were all in sync and in rhythm," Gann said. "It was a really exciting game, especially for the seniors to end on such a high note. We're happy with how we played and we're really going to miss this team."
Altman controlled the flow of the game and set up Oxy's hitters nicely, dishing out 39 assists.
Cassidy did what she's done throughout her career, keeping ball after ball alive with diving saves. Oxy's libero, who came into the match fourth in the nation in digs per set, finished with 23.
Mort had nine kills on .231 hitting and Hunt added five digs and two aces.
Gann went off in Game 1, putting away nine kills on .471 hitting. The Tigers held a four-point cushion for most of the first set. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 18-16, but then Gann ended their 4-0 run with a kill, sparking a 7-3 run to finish the set and give Oxy a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Tigers fell behind early in Game 2. Allison Jensen finished the second of two Oxy overpasses and the Bulldogs capitalized on Oxy's sloppy passing to take a 9-4 lead. The Tigers got to even at 16, and then ran away on a 9-2 run.
Oxy made its move again in Game 3 around the same time. Redlands cut the Tigers lead to 18-16 before Oxy rallied for seven of the next nine points.
Cassidy, Altman, Mort, Hunt and Gann were recognized with a brief pregame ceremony. Altman is one of the best setters in the SCIAC, Cassidy is maybe the best libero, Hana Hunt has blossomed into a very good defensive specialist and Gann and Mort are two of the more dangerous hitters.
The Tigers close out the season on Saturday at Chapman at 6 p.m.
