The Tigers (3-3), who stumbled a bit out of the gate against some tough teams this season, picked up their third victory in three days and their most impressive win of the season over a team that had rattled off seven matches in a row themselves.

Josh Dancu (Maple, Fla.) won at No. 1 singles, Stephen Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) won at No. 2 singles and Jordan Brown (San Diego) earned a victory at the No. 3 spot. Dancu defeated Alexander Chin 6-4, 6-1, improving to 4-1 as Oxy's No. 1. Perkins beat Andrew Hwang 6-2, 6-4 and Brown defeated Paul Cooper 6-4, 6-3.

"The top of our lineup played smart, consistent and inspired tennis," Occidental coach Brian Newhall said.

The Tigers built a 3-0 cushion with wins in the doubles portion of the match, with Perkins and Jamie Grossman (Tiburon) beating Hwang and Chin at No. 2 doubles in the closest match of the day, 9-8. At No. 1 doubles, Dancu and Brown defeated Paul Cooper and Becker McCoy 8-5. Kevin Siebs (Houston, Texas) and Avery Howard (Missoula, Mont.) had Oxy's other doubles win at No. 3, beating Austin Jian and Erik Johnson 8-4.

"We played our best doubles of the year," Newhall said. "In a tight match, the 3-0 cushion really gave us a boost of momentum going into singles."

Oxy plays its fourth home match in four days today at 3:30 p.m. against Tufts at Scholl Canyon.

"We've challenged ourselves by playing regionally and nationally ranked teams and now we're reaping the benefits and enjoying some nice momentum against quality competition," Newhall said.
