LOS ANGELES — Occidental No. 1 Keilani Bonis-Ericksen just missed knocking off Maegan Zamilpa — West Region No. 7 — as the Tigers fell to Whittier 9-0 on Friday.
Oxy drops to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC play. Whittier improves 6-6 and 1-1.
Bonis-Ericksen lost 5-7, 6-2, 11-9.
But she played some of her best tennis of the season.
"Her ground strokes were on, she moved well, hit hard and was mentally tough," Oxy head coach Jeff Normile said.
The sophomore battled back from down 8-4 in the match tiebreaker to even the score at 8-8 before running out of gas.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at Redlands at 10 a.m.
