Los Angeles, CA – At home last Tuesday afternoon, the Oxy women were matched up against Vassar College. At #1 and #2 singles Andei Fukushige '23 and Sarah Fleming '23 respectively earned wins for the Tigers. Fukushige secured a smooth 6-1, 6-1 victory and Fleming battled for a score of 6-3, 6-3.
At the #1 doubles spot the same pairing had an early 3-0 lead, but Vassar battled back, and the match was pushed to a tiebreaker. The match featured lengthy baseline rallies with the Vassar throwing up tricky lobs in the windy conditions.
Although each of the three doubles teams underwent tough losses, they showed their willingness to fight and their strong potential for growth.
In the other singles matches, three of the Oxy women showed their Tiger spirit with comebacks in the second set. Alexis Matabuena '24 at #3 and Emma Silber '23 at #4 both pushed to get 4 games.
Katie Wolber '22 at #6 won her second set 6-4. By placing her shots with great depth and staying patient, she forced the match to a third set tiebreaker.
Next match: The women play Bowdoin at 11:00 AM next Saturday, March 19th at home.
