Los Angeles, CA – At home on Saturday morning the Tiger women took on Caltech, who brought a deep lineup of talented players. Prior to the match, the Tigers celebrated their two graduating seniors: Xavi Cambell and Katie Wolber, who are also the team's co-captains. Even though Oxy lost the duel 2-7, they remained dominant at the top doubles and singles spots, and also had fun celebrating their teammates.
At #1 doubles, Andei Fukushige and Sarah Fleming took the win over the Beavers 8-5. They remained disciplined and athletic during the match, moving to take balls out of the middle of the court. The pair was also striking returns well and it earned them a couple important breaks of serve.
Dana Edson and Alexis Matabuena lost their match at #2 doubles but had several close games, 3 of which they won. Xavi Campbell and Emma Silber lost 1-8 at #3.
While the Tigers ultimately lost five of their matches in singles, Fukushige took a win at the top of the line-up. At the #1 singles spot she played a clean 6-1, 6-3 match. She returned well and hit several winners with her flat, well-directed ground strokes.
Senior Xavi Campbell played a tough match at #4 but challenged Tech with extended baseline rallies. Campbell remained positive throughout the match and was able to improve in the second set. Tilly Depery lost at #5 as well but made many smart shot choices throughout her match. The sophomore has shown much growth throughout her first season at Oxy.
