Los Angeles, CA – The Occidental Women's Tennis opened their season with a convincing 7-2 victory over Lewis and Clark this past Friday.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead on the visiting Pioneers with a 8-0 victory at number one doubles by seniors Andei Fukushige and Sarah Fleming. Juniors Alexis Matabuena and Mathilde Depery extended the Tiger lead by taking a 8-5 decision at number two doubles. Moments later, seniors Lillian Lin and Emma Silber secured the Tigers doubles sweep with a 8-5 win at number three doubles.
The Tigers continued their momentum into the singles portion with Fukushige rolling to a 6-0,6-0 win at number one singles and Fleming clinching the Tiger win 6-2,6-1 at number two singles.
Courts 3 through 6 all proved to be back and forth battles that went to deciding third sets. Junior Alexis Matabuena got another point on the board for Oxy when she pulled out a close win at number three singles 7-5,3-6,10-5. Lewis and Clark won the first set on courts 4 through 6, before Tiger players Julia Chun (#4 singles), Emma Silber (#5 singles), and first-year Nicole Anderson (#6 singles) all came roaring back to force deciding third sets. Chun and Silber fell just short in their matches losing 9-11 in the super tiebreakers, while Anderson came up clutch securing the first win of her Oxy career 3-6,6-1,11-9.
The Tigers will next play College of the Canyons at home on Saturday, February 18th at 10am.
