The Occidental Women's Tennis Team picked up a big 6-3 win on Wednesday against in region rival UC Santa Cruz. It was a back and forth battle that ultimately saw four of the six singles matches go the full three sets. "I was really proud of the way we competed today," said Oxy Head Coach Stephen Perkins, "there were a lot of close matches and we showed a lot of toughness and resilience throughout."
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at number one and two doubles. Seniors Andei Fukushige and Sarah Fleming edged out their counterparts from Santa Cruz 8-6 at number one doubles while juniors Mathilde Depery and Alexis Matabuena won 8-4 at number two doubles.
In singles play, Fleming was the first Tiger player to secure a win with a 6-4,7-5 victory at number two singles. After Santa Cruz took the match at number three singles, Fukushige gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead with a come from behind three set win at number one singles 3-6,6-4,6-2. This left the Tigers one win from the victory with the number four through six singles matches all locked in tight third sets. Sophomore Julia Chun ultimately clinched the match for the Tigers with her 6-4,2-6,6-4 win at number four singles. Emma Silber provided the sixth point for the Tigers at number five singles with a clutch 2-6,6-1,7-6(4) win.
The Tigers return to action this Saturday at home against Chapman University at 10am.
