Track & Field racks up seven titles, Hawley named Stary recipient at SCIAC Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. — Over the weekend, Occidental College secured fourth place in both the men's and women's team standings at the SCIAC Track & Field Championships, an improvement from last season as the Tigers won seven events, five more than last year. 

Standout performances included James Buellesbach winning the men's 110-meter hurdles, making him a first-time SCIAC champion, and Delphine Way capturing the women's 800-meter run, also earning her first SCIAC championship title, with her second coming in the women's 4x4 relay. Notably, Emerson Ames repeated as the Long Jump SCIAC Champion. The junior was the conference's best long jumper in 2025 before soaring to 7.16m on Saturday.

Phoebe Ogden secured first place in the Women's 400 Meter Dash, becoming a first-time SCIAC champion, followed by Amelia Vena in fifth and Skylar Cottell in sixth. Shane Kawakami-Williams won the Men's 100 Meter Dash and also became a first-time SCIAC champion. Occidental's Men's 4x100 Meter Relay team of Hanalei Heresa, Shane Kawakami-Williams, Khylee Jackson and Zachary McGraw finished first with a time of 41.47, contributing to the team's overall improved performance.

Another standout relay came in the Women's 4x4, claiming first with a time of 3:52.64, adding to the list of champions. The team was made up of Amelia Vena, Ogden, Skylar Cottell and Way. It was a tight finish as the Tigers beat Chapman by less than a second.

Megan Cover earned second place in the Women's 3000 Steeplechase while Brooke Tompkins notched the same mark in the 400 hurdles. Each earned All-SCIAC recognition. 

Around the field, Zoey Hrabe and Kayla Sepulbeda placed second in the Women's Pole Vault and shot put respectively. Khylee Jackson finished fourth in the Men's High Jump.
Keira Stephany secured fourth place in the Women's Javelin Throw. Uma Kucera took sixth in the Women's Discus Throw.

Outside of competition, Elizabeth Hawley was awarded the Jennifer Stary Award. The award is given to the senior women's athlete that exhibits high character on and off the track through great leadership and sportsmanship among other traits.
